Qtown assault accused picked up at airport

Border officials at Christchurch Airport have picked up a British man suspected be involved in a Queenstown assault.

The 28-year-old would appear in the Christchurch District Court this morning charged with assault. 

Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown, said the incident involving a woman happened outside Devil Burger in Church St at 2.40am on Wednesday.

"He [allegedly] punched her in the face once," Sgt Duffy said.

"She did suffer injuries to the mouth - a cut lip and bleeding."

The man, who was attempting to fly to Sydney yesterday, was identified after pictures were circulated on social media.

Sgt Duffy said several Queenstown residents came forward with information on Saturday, leading to a border alert being placed on the man.
