Night skiing canned

Coronet Peak will not open for night skiing as part of Queenstown Winter Festival celebrations, due to a lack of snow.

All other festival activities have been moved to the Remarkables ski area, including today's Dog Derby event and the Suitcase Race, part of Mountain Mayhem on Saturday.

Coronet Peak manager Ross Copland said the field was unlikely to open for skiing this weekend, but anyone interested in snowtubing should come up and have a go.

He said management was taking things day-by-day but the news was not a "shock'' as opening is weather dependent.

Coronet Peak opened on June 11 but unseasonable weather has stripped the mountain of snow.

"We are rebuilding. There will be more snow-making tonight, so [it is] getting closer.''

The closure has left hundreds of ski-workers on reduced hours but Mr Copland said staff morale was good.

Festival director Lisa Buckingham said while it was disappointing night skiing could not go ahead, she was pleased the Remarkables was able to host all other programmed events.
