Wakatipu residents took advantage of a rare chance to watch top-flight live cricket yesterday.

A crowd of more than 1000 sat on the grass embankment at John Davies Oval, in Frankton, for the Dream11 Super Smash T20 double-header between Otago and Wellington.

There were many young fans, either watching with their families or out the back having their own cricketing battles.

Among them was Daniel Myers, of Queenstown, who said he nagged his parents to take him after seeing two other boys at his school get free tickets in a promotion for the games.

"I’ve been begging for the last two weeks."

In fine but breezy conditions, the Otago Volts lost by five wickets to the Wellington Firebirds.

Earlier in the day, Wellington Blaze defeated the previously unbeaten Otago Sparks by 66 runs.

In today’s double-header at the same venue, the Sparks play the Auckland Hearts, followed by the Volts against the Auckland Aces.
