The lights were turned on for Queenstown’s annual sensory smorgasbord - Luma - on Thursday night.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the event, launched in 2016, which runs between 5pm and 10pm until Monday.

The Queenstown Gardens have been taken over by nationally and internationally renowned artists, including light, sound and performance artists and DJs, who have collaborated on various pieces to entertain and enchant the audience.

Luma Charitable Trust chairman Duncan Forsyth said this year’s event was themed ‘‘Arborea’’ — loosely translated as ‘‘a life in the trees’’.

The centre of the spectacle this year is in the Rose Garden — other main attractions are at the croquet lawn, the headlands and in the forest.

Mr Forsyth said people would walk into a ‘‘full immersive space’’ and as they moved through they would see ‘‘more performances, hospitality offerings and world-class production’’.
