About 100 amateur golfers descended on Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown, at the weekend for the Millbrook Masters tournament, which runs until this Friday.

Organiser Kim Buckley said about half of the competitors were New Zealanders and about half Australian, with one UK entrant in the mix, and many would be staying in Queenstown after the masters' competitive four rounds were over.

"It's set up so that people can come from all over the world and have a social week enjoying the company of other golfers and what Millbrook and Queenstown have to offer," she said.

The tournament, which began with an opening dinner on Saturday night, and followed with the first round yesterday, has a $10,000 prize-pool.

The Masters is open only to competitors 35 years and older, and golfers compete in age groups up to 65-plus.

Ms Buckley said a lot of the competitors were couples, but that did not stop single entrants enjoying the week.
