Jetstar adds Queenstown-Melbourne route

Jetstar has announced it will run daily evening flights between Queenstown and Melbourne for three months from June 24.

The Qantas cut-price subsidiary's new schedule starts a week before arch-rival Air New Zealand begins a daily after-dark service between the South Island resort and Auckland.

Jetstar's first evening flight to the Australian city is on the opening day of the Queenstown Winter Festival.

Air New Zealand announced in January it would begin night operations in the resort on July 1.

Both airlines are awaiting regulatory approval.

Jetstar New Zealand head Grant Kerr said night flights would give travellers more options for planning winter holidays in Queenstown.

The service would also provide better connections for passengers on long-haul airlines travelling to and from the resort via Melbourne.

Jetstar's transtasman service would leave Melbourne at 2.05pm and arrive in Queenstown at 7.20pm.

The return flight would depart at 8.20pm and arrive in Melbourne at 9.55pm.
