Arrowtown local Steve Jarvis was ''surprised'' when he was crowned winner of his Thriller boxing bout against Chace Martin.

The 48-year-old, who was penalised for using the inside of his glove, was not confident he had secured the advantage.

''I thought I'd lost it as the ref had pulled me up.''

Mr Jarvis was still feeling bruised yesterday and said Mr Martin (31) landed some hard punches.

''He has a big right hand and he certainly gave me two big ones that gave me the wobbles.

''But I knew I had to start throwing punches straight back as if I stepped back he would keep coming.''

He described the three-round fight as an awesome but nerve-racking experience.

Mr Jarvis said his training had paid off.

''You just go into automatic mode.

''I don't remember how well I fought or whether I did the game plan by using everything the coaches teach you. I can't remember everything about it.''

Jarvis was one of 18 Wakatipu locals competing in the event after a 14-week training camp led by head coach Steve Orr.

He said all competitors ''fought their hearts out.''

''Every single one of them went at it as hard as they could, as fast as they could and for as long as they could.

'There is absolutely nothing I could have said to them on how to improve.

''You can't teach heart and every single one of them proved that. They left it all in the ring and did exactly what we told them to do. They had nothing more to give.''

The event opened with an amateur bout between New Zealand's top two light welterweight fighters, Richie Hadlow and Sam Burdett-Clark.

Hadlow clinched the win.
