Wakatipu hockey player Judy Nelson will captain the New Zealand women's over-50s masters hockey side next month for the world Masters tournament being held in England.

Mrs Nelson (51) was selected for the team after competing in the national masters tournament in Palmerston North in March and this month was selected as the side's captain.

The world masters tournament will be held directly after the Olympics from August 14-24 in Canterbury, Kent.

Mrs Nelson has played for her Wakatipu club for more than 15 years and has played most of her representative career for Central Otago.

She said she was already looking forward to the tournament, but was honoured to gain the extra responsibility.

New Zealand will send six teams to the tournament: over-40 and over-50 women's teams as well as men's squads for the 40, 45, 50 and 55 categories.

Competing at the tournament are Australia, South Africa, Singapore and the United States as well as a strong European representation.
