Frankton hospital upgrade progressing well

Queenstown's CT scanner will be installed early in June at Lakes District Hospital.

Southern District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming said the $6.5million upgrade to Frankton's hospital was progressing well - the first stage is on track to be completed in the next few weeks.

The new CT scanner space and an emergency department extension would be finished early next month, and it was expected the latter would become operational by mid-May ahead of the CT scanner's installation.

The second stage of the upgrade, to include the redevelopment of the existing emergency department and outpatient services, was expected to be finished by September.

Mr Fleming praised the efforts of the DHB building and property staff and the contractors for their work to date.

"We are very pleased with the progress made on this vital development for the people of the lakes district and our hard-working staff.

"We look forward to opening the doors to these modern state-of-the-art clinical facilities."

The DHB gained consent for the upgrade, including building two extensions, last June.

On completion the emergency department extension, 294sq m, would hold nine beds (including the existing seven), two resuscitation bays, a reception, waiting area, triage and consultation areas, a medical students' training room, plaster bay, decontamination area and an isolation room to treat patients who were potentially contagious.

The 168sqm wing will hold a "district nurses' department" and include "elements of hospital and healthcare activities".

Along with the CT scanner, a clean utility room is also proposed in the new build, while a refurbishment of the existing hospital would include "telehealth" facilities and a dedicated paediatric and patient care room, including a whanau room.
