One person was heard whispering, "maybe it’s someone’s birthday", another proposed it was a wedding celebration.

All chatter from Steamer Wharf to Marine Parade on Queenstown’s waterfront was in relation to apparently impromptu fireworks on Saturday evening.

Bars emptied as people watched the display over Lake Wakatipu and wondered what was going on. The explosive surprise, which lasted about five or six minutes, was the official launch of a penthouse at Eichardt’s Private Hotel.

The plush new digs come with a price tag of $10,000 per night and a minimum three-night stay.

It welcomes its first guests tomorrow and the display was part of a private black-tie event for Queenstown notables and those associated with the exclusive hotel. It is the country’s most expensive suite and the 240sqm space and 100sqm balcony comes with its own butler, chef and chauffeur.

New Zealand-born owner Andrew Cox, who is now based in Australia, said the launch marked the opening on an "icon".

He said it is already booked out for the next three New Year’s Eves and that demand overall is high.

Those staying will mainly be from North America, Europe or Australia.

"No Kiwis are booked in. It is ultra high-end net worth."

Mr Cox stayed in the suite on Saturday evening and said the views were spectacular.

He did point out the fireworks were not a complete surprise. A permit had been granted.
