Two fire appliances were called to the blaze, which started about 8pm in long grass below the Rees Hotel and covered an area of about 100sq m.
Police at the scene could not say how the fire started.
A jogger told the Otago Daily Times he ran past the scene at 8.10pm and saw flames spreading up the bank from the track.
