Firefighters tackled a blaze on Queenstown Hill behind multimillion-dollar homes in a gated community last night.
The brigade was called to the 20m by 20m scrub fire at 6.39pm, near The Peak, off Belfast Tce.
Volunteer crews were spraying water on to the fire within nine minutes of being called, concerned it could spread to the Douglas fir forest on the hill above.
Andrew Norris, shift manager at Fire Emergency New Zealand’s southern communication centre in Christchurch, said the fire was above the homes and they were not threatened.
"It’s all under control and contained," he said at 7.15pm.
"We did have initial concerns — we had multiple calls to it, several calls from people up the forest above it."
Queenstown Hill has a popular walking track.
"It’s too early to say what caused it; they’re still up there damping down."
Three crews from Queenstown, one from Frankton and the water tanker from Arrowtown attended.
