Kingston will get a new emergency services building before the end of the year, with construction expected to start later this month.

Kingston Community Association Emergency Services Building Committee chairman John Jones said all the funding was in place, and the resource consent was expected to be approved within the next week or two.

"As soon as we have all the consents in place, we are ready to start the earthworks," he said.

The new emergency services centre will consist of two buildings - the existing fire station with an extension for a third bay, with a complete interior refit, and a new stand-alone building next to the fire station, which will house St John and also have room for the community police and health professionals.

"We have also been in talks with Plunket in the hope we could have such a facility for young families," Mr Jones said.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $348,000.

Most of the money has come from a $228,000 grant from Community Trust of Southland, with additional funding from the Queenstown Lakes District Council ($50,000), St John ($25,000), Rural Fire Service ($15,000), Kingston Fire Brigade ($10,000) and local fundraising ($20,000).

The buildings will be owned and maintained by the council and operated by a management committee made up of the Kingston Community Association and representation from user groups.

"It will be a great asset for the growing community of Kingston, and for our emergency services," Mr Jones said.
