Queenstown's future ice hockey stars are taking over an iconic Arrowtown business tomorrow, to help cover the costs of their 2025 season.

From 9am the co-ed Junior Stampede will be running a unique fundraiser at the Arrowtown Bakery Cafe, selling coffee, soup, bacon and egg butties, cakes and sweet treats, all made by Catherine Denton, whose family own the business.

There’ll also be prizes, via a chocolate wheel, up for grabs — all proceeds from the day will go to supporting the players in this year’s expanded national tournament.

Traditionally only played in Dunedin, this year the Junior Stampede will also travel to Christchurch and, for the first time in more than six years, host a round at the Queenstown Ice Arena, in August, giving them a taste of what the senior SkyCity Stampede men’s and Wakatipu Wild women’s teams experience.

But that’s coming with a hefty $11,000 fee hike for the team, which is over $2500 per player.

Lisa Campbell, whose son Blake plays for the Junior Stampede, says they’re incredibly grateful to Denton for her support, noting she’s worked with a lot of the bakery’s suppliers to get them to donate goods for the fundraising day.
