Community grants top $95,000

More than $95,000 has been granted to a total of 44 community organisations in the Queenstown Lakes district in the 2010 SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust funding round.

This year's grants include $3000 to the Arrowtown Scout Group to fund resources for new equipment; $1000 for Alzheimers Society Southland Inc to buy resources for its office library; $2000 for Queenstown Primary School to purchase four netbook computers; $1500 for the Upper Clutha Women's Support Group Inc for training and supervision of staff; and $2500 to Wanakafest Community Trust Board to contribute towards the sound, lighting and printing costs of the 2011 festival.

SkyCity Queenstown executive manager Michelle Baillie said she was delighted with the distribution of this year's funds.

"We are proud to be able to give something back to the community that we are part of through the SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust.

"The trustees, through their experience and careful consideration, have once again succeeded in helping a broad range of organisations and services and we look forward to seeing the benefits that our grants have brought to the recipients over the coming year."

Grant applications were decided by a panel of trustees - Jim Ryan, Vicki Buckham, Kim Wilkinson and trust chairman Clark Pirie.

Mr Pirie said the trust was proud to help improve community life and family well-being in Queenstown.

"We are about supporting the community organisations that help make the Lakes district a great place to live."

Now in its eighth year, the trust has given more than $900,000 to over 249 community groups in the region as part of its commitment and contribution to the Queenstown community.

Grant recipients will be recognised and celebrated at a function at SkyCity Queenstown Casino on Wednesday.

Applications for next year's trust grants are due to open next June.
