Security footage of an alleged racist incident and throwing of a cup of coffee in Queenstown has proved useful, police say.
Sergeant Steve Watt confirmed police were investigating circumstances surrounding an alleged assault, when an Australian tourist had coffee "poured over her head'' after challenging a woman making derogatory comments about Asian tourists.
"The security images proved very useful and we have excellent footage of the main offender.''
The 30-year-old victim, who was standing with a friend in Shotover St outside Fergbaker, was part of a pub crawl when two women tried to push past them at 12.30am on Sunday.
"One woman was overheard making some racist comments. The victim approached the female and said, `you can't say this'.''
The situation escalated and the woman poured the drink over the victim's head, face and clothes, Sgt Watt said.
She had a small burn to her face and complained of sore eyes as a result of the alleged assault.
Security guards stepped in to calm the situation.
Police were called, but the two women had left before they arrived.
Sgt Watt said racist behaviour was unacceptable. He appealed for anyone who witnessed the incidents to come forward with information.
"Queenstown is a tourist destination and we host a number of different nationalities. Racist behaviour will not be tolerated.''
He confirmed the incident was being investigated as an assault at this stage.
"Further charges may result once the offender has been identified and spoken to.''
