Queenstown police are appealing for drivers to take care on the roads over the long weekend.

There is likely to be an increased number of motorcyclists around, passing through to the Otago Motorcycle Club's Brass Monkey Rally at Idaburn Dam in Oturehua.

And the resort has experienced wild weather in May, creating treacherous driving conditions, although the forecast for the weekend is milder.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Bisset, of Queenstown, said: ''Approaching Queen's Birthday weekend we'd like to remind the public to be patient on the roads, to leave a couple of minutes early, and to reduce their speed.

'''With the weather the roads will potentially be slippery so we just need everyone to drive to the conditions.''

Four drivers slid off the road at Devil's Staircase, on State Highway 6 between Queenstown and Kingston, over just five days earlier this month after heavy rain.

Acting Snr Sgt Bisset adds: ''With the Brass Monkey event, there will be a massive increase in the number of motorcycles on the roads.

''So people need to be extremely vigilant and avoid distractions while driving.

''Just everyone be careful on the roads.''
