A daredevil horsewoman will be one of the stars of the Lake Hayes A&P Show tomorrow.

Dunedin free rider Talia Allison will give a 15-minute demonstration of riding without a saddle or bridle.

The 23-year-old said her 1.30pm display would include galloping without holding on to her horse, hopping on and off while it cantered, jumping obstacles and rearing.

The last-mentioned was "normally a naughty trait, but my horse does it on command".

She had been performing free riding in public for nearly a year, and found it "a thrill".

Her interest in the sport was kindled five years ago while watching videos of other New Zealand-based free riders performing.

However, she had learned her craft through "trial and error", as there was no-one in the region she could train with, taking a few tumbles as a result.

The 102nd show, which is held at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds beside State Highway 6, will also feature traditional horse and pony competitions including a miniature pony section, Clydesdales and showjumping.

Outside the ring, men’s fashion in the field is back for a second year with a Kiwi flavoured theme, stubbies and beanies.

There will also be usual show favourites such as sheep shearing, food and craft stalls, wood chopping, music and side show rides.

President Phillip Bunn said it would be a "fantastic" day out for the family.

● Gates open at 7am,  trade and food stalls open at 9am, the Grand Parade starts at  noon.
