Arrests fuel Queenstown drink-drive concerns

The number of drink drivers being processed in Queenstown is concerning, police say.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, told the Otago Daily Times, nine people were arrested over the weekend period for recording an excess breath alcohol level.

Last weekend there were seven.

She urged drivers to take heed, saying police “don’t want to pick them up off the side of the road after they have crashed.”

“That is the last job police want to do – to tell a family that a loved one is not coming home.”

She is concerned Queenstown residents are “taking a chance” and driving after a few drinks.

“They may not be able to react in time and cause harm to other road users.”

The alleged drink drivers were stopped at different times and locations; a number at police check points and a number of random stops, Snr Sgt Enoka confirmed.

She said those abiding by road rules shouldn’t be put at risk by those that choose to flout the law.

“Any member of the public should be able to drive on the road and be able to get home safe.”

Those arrested will appear in Queenstown Lakes District Court.
