What were you doing at 12.30pm yesterday? Chances are you were like hundreds of others throughout the region, out and about enjoying a brilliant Otago summer's day. On the dot of 12.30pm, Otago Daily Times reporters spoke to a handful of people about what brought them to their particular location. Here are their stories.

Hunger was the burning issue at lunch time in Wanaka's Yohei Cafe yesterday.

Young sisters Madeline (6) and Rachael (4) McPhail only had eyes for the food cabinet when the Otago Daily Times met them just before noon, in the cafe operated by John and Lynette Gordon in the Spencer Mall.

The girls and their mother Jo Patching, and their father Stuart McPhail, moved to Wanaka from Sydney, Australia, on December 16.

They are renting at the moment and plan to be in their own home by next month.

Ms Patching and Mr McPhail said they had been coming backwards and forwards to Wanaka for about 20 years.

Because they had lived and worked in Wanaka previously, they knew what to expect.

"We've finally made the plunge to move.

"We plan to enjoy the nice weather, then look for work," Ms Patching said.

Also in the queue was Wanaka man Doug Tuckett, who did not know the Australian family.

"I was just standing next to them," he said.

Mr Gordon said trading this summer had been excellent, with takings up on last year.

The fine weather had provided constant custom, with most people taking their coffees and sushi away.

"It's not like last year, when it rained and people camped in here and we had lots of dishes," he said.
