A century of golf in Arrowtown was celebrated when 152 players in pairs played 27 holes across the Arrowtown Golf Club, Millbrook and The Hills yesterday.
Arrowtown club secretary-manager John Stephens, Millbrook country club manager Brian Spicer and The Hills director of golf Craig Palmer started organising the milestone event six months ago.
Archive research in the Lakes District Museum had shown a "six-hole saunter" of golf was first played on Jopp St, in 1911.
Members of the three courses were given first choice to pay the $350 per pair entry fee, before the FBBB Stableford competition was opened to the public.
There were only six non-members on the day, Mr Stephens said.
Arrowtown's school and rugby club volunteers operating fundraising refreshment stalls for thirsty golfers playing in a large loop between all three courses.
Professional golfers John Griffin, Greg Turner, Craig Palmer and Ben Gallie played their own game in parallel.
A total of $40,000 in prizes was given away, including a Royal Sydney Golf Club experience and accommodation package and $12,000 in Titleist vouchers.
The entry fee included a dinner and entertainment by the Station Agents in the Athenaeum Hall last night. 100 Year Challenge results to follow in the Queenstown Times on Wednesday.
