Snow-sports enthusiasts and anyone wanting to be involved in the southern hemisphere's largest winter sports event are invited to attend 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games volunteer information nights in Queenstown and Wanaka next week.

The biggest winter sports event outside of the Winter Olympics, the games take place from August 12-28, featuring 38 sporting events, 1000 elite athletes from 50 nations and a full "Downtown Sessions" festival programme featuring films, live music and entertainment and rail-jam extravaganzas in Queenstown, Lake Wanaka, Dunedin and Methven.

To ensure the games run smoothly, more than 300 volunteers are needed.

At the information evenings, WGNZ chief executive Arthur Klap will tell prospective volunteers how the event works and how they can be involved.

"Volunteers are absolutely essential to the success of the Winter Games and hugely valued members of the team," he said.

"Not all the jobs are snow-related. We'll need people to man information desks, transport teams, help behind the scenes as well as be on the mountains. It's a great opportunity to be involved in a world-class event, learn some new skills and enjoy the experience of a lifetime."

The volunteers will not go home empty-handed - they get gifts, some will get a lift ticket on the days worked plus one extra to enjoy in their own time, food and drinks on days worked and an invitation to the games after-party.

• Information nights will be held on Monday, July 11, at Uno Bar, Ardmore St, Wanaka at 6pm and on Wednesday, July 13, at Common Room, Level 1, Queenstown Resort College at 6pm. For further information, contact Anna Hiatt at volunteers@wintergamesnz.com
