The vehicle used by a child to car surf near Hokitika belongs to a Wanaka man, police say.
Dunedin road policing manager Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall said the car was registered to a Dunedin address but the registered owner lived in Wanaka.
''It took a while to find out where the owner lived, but they found him up in Wanaka.''
The file would be sent to Wanaka police for further investigation, he said.
Hokitika police were given a photograph of a child allegedly sitting out of the sunroof of a vehicle travelling on a road near Lake Mahinapua earlier this month.
Hokitika police sent the file to Dunedin police after the investigation revealed the car was registered to a Dunedin address.
