Waitiri Loop trail upgraded on anniversary

The Gibbston Community Association yesterday upgraded the Waitiri Loop trail on the fourth anniversary of its official opening.

The 2.4km trail, which leaves from the Waitiri Creek Wines car park, was the oldest section of the Gibbston River Trail, which in total spans more than 8km, and was officially opened in December.

There were two loops within the trail, which extends from the Kawarau Bungy car park to the Waitiri Creek Wines site.

The Waitiri Loop was graded "easy" by the National Standards, making it the most unchallenging section of the river trail for children or the elderly.

Community Association chairwoman Susan Stevens said the association had been discussing a maintenance regime with the Department of Conservation and hired Treecare Southern Lakes to open the river views and eliminate any problems with bits of briar poking out into the track.

Mrs Stevens said, " ... they did a fabulous job."
