Volunteers wanted to help clear wildings

The war on wilding pine trees in the Wakatipu will enter its next phase on Tuesday when volunteers clear the introduced menace from a part of Queenstown Hill.

Nomad Safaris is calling for volunteers to join staff on a mission to cut down the pines using loppers and pull up the roots on April 5.

The group will assemble at the depot of the 4WD scenic tour operator, on the corner of Gorge Rd and Industrial Pl, at 1.30pm.

Transport to the site will be provided, along with tools and afternoon tea.

The battle against the pines finishes about 5pm.

Organiser and Nomad Safaris tour guide Fran O'Connor said yesterday wilding pines were a nuisance because the trees took over pristine landscape and farmland and damaged native biodiversity.

The hill would be lost if wilding pines took over.

Ms O'Connor said she and a friend uprooted about 150 pines in an hour from the Remarkables access road this week.

Volunteers can register interest and organise pick-ups by calling Nomad Safaris on (03) 442-6699.
