Views still sought on waste water scheme

Cardrona residents and ratepayers appear to be generally in favour of a proposed community wastewater scheme, based on feedback so far.

However, more response is still being sought by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Cardrona relies on private septic systems and three communal wastewater treatment plants at present, but the QLDC is in the process of gauging support for a community scheme.

To establish a community scheme it must be clearly demonstrated 75% of ratepayers are in favour of it.

An options report identifying the most suitable site for a plant and disposal system was presented to the community in May and feedback forms were then provided to residents and ratepayers.

QLDC Wanaka project manager Rob Darby said the council had had about 50 forms returned, but that was "nowhere near 100%, so it would still be good to hear from more people".

Although he had not yet analysed the feedback, "in general they're in favour of council moving ...

towards a community scheme".

If further feedback remains mostly in support of proceeding with the proposed scheme, the council will develop cost estimate and feasibility information, hopefully during October, before a final ratepayer-only vote by the end of November.

A community scheme would initially be privately owned, constructed and operated by a developer, but endorsed by the council and the community.

A site known as "Phoenix 47" at the southern end of the village on the eastern side of Cardrona Valley Rd has been identified as the preferred option in terms of cost, because it is in town and has an existing wastewater plant with the potential for expansion.
