Two callouts for Wanaka search crews

LandSAR Wanaka members dealt with two search and rescue operations yesterday.

In the first, a female climber, who was descending Mt Aspiring with a guide, rolled her ankle. She managed to make it to the Colin Todd Hut at the base of the North West Ridge, where her guide then assessed her injury and decided she would not be able to make it back to Wanaka.

He raised the alarm and a helicopter was dispatched. LandSAR members helped retrieve the injured woman, who was taken to Wanaka's medical centre for treatment for a fractured ankle.

Later in the day, a woman from Singapore injured her back while tramping on the Motatapu Track near the Roses Saddle Hut. She activated an emergency locator beacon and Wanaka police and search and rescue were notified of the situation by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand, in Wellington.

A helicopter with LandSAR members on board collected the woman and took her to the medical centre.
