Traffic details key to rezoning notification

A bid to extend residential and industrial zones off Ballantyne Rd, near Wanaka, will be publicly notified, as long as more details about the effects on traffic are provided to the Queenstown Lakes District Council's satisfaction.

The recommendation was unanimously carried by the council's strategy committee.

It concerned proposed plan change 46, submitted by Orchard Road Holdings, to rezone 19.3ha of flat pastoral land from rural general to 13.4ha of low-density residential and 5.9ha of ''industrial B''.

An estimated 96 dwellings could be built and the industrial rezoning would enable further industrial and service activities adjoining the operative industrial B zoning created by plan change 36 in March.

Senior policy planner Blair Devlin said in his report there were no grounds for rejecting the plan change request, or stating it should be progressed as resource consent.

There was a large amount of undeveloped low-density residentially zoned industrial B and industrial B land.

Willowridge Developments director Allan Dippie said earlier, during the committee's public forum, he was pleased to see the proposed plan change was moving ahead.

A business community was starting to grow as an extension to Ballantyne Rd, Mr Dippie said.

''In the future, this will become a major business light industrial zone.''
