Tourism data good news

It has been a bumper winter season so far, with Queenstown recording more than double the national average growth in guest nights last month.

Destination Queenstown chief executive Tony Everitt said he was delighted with the results, which "round off a year of recovery".

"Everything has come together to ensure our winter season starts well and starts early. We've had a robust start to the ski season, a fantastic Winter Festival, more direct domestic and transtasman flights, and a particularly strong response from the Australian market."

Winter had also started strongly in the conference and incentive market compared with last year and forward bookings were tracking well for the season.

In regard to long-haul markets, Asia had bounced back from its 2009 flu-impacted lows, but North America and Europe remained challenging as the economic downturn dulled travel demand, he said.

NZSki chief executive James Coddington was "very happy" with the strong start to the ski season.

"Coronet Peak and the Remarkables got off to a great start this year. The early snowfalls, combined with world-class snow-making, meant we were able to provide excellent trail conditions from day one.

"It's also very pleasing to see the strong numbers coming out of Australia, as a considerable amount of work and investment has been put into driving the Australian growth by NZSki and its partners, including Destination Queenstown, Tourism New Zealand and the airlines," Mr Coddington said.

Out of 12 regions, Otago had the second-highest increase in international guest nights in June compared with last year, an 11% increase.

Nationally, overnight stays by guests in New Zealand hotels were up 9%.

Hotels, motels, backpackers and holiday parks had more guest nights. Increased hotel guest nights accounted for about half the increase in total guest nights.

New Zealand Hotel Council Queenstown chairman John McIlwain said Queenstown was "in a good space".

"June is traditionally one of the quieter months of the year so for a June it was exceptionally good. There are a number of factors. The fact that Coronet Peak could open in the first week of June made a big difference. We've had more conference business in town than usual and the massive Australian market has come," he said.

A successful Winter Festival also helped boost arrivals at the end of June, he said.
