Teen party alcohol-free

Finding things to do is often hard when you are 14, but Wanaka teenager Aaron Blackledge (18) believes he can help.

Aaron, a year 13 pupil at Mt Aspiring College, has taken over organising private parties for Wanaka's young teenagers from Blue Moon founder Sophia Dewaal, who is now at university in Wellington.

Miss Dewaal set up Blue Moon, a youth-led, non-profit community organisation supported by Kahu Youth, last year to show young people they could have a great night out without alcohol or drugs.

"Me being a younger person in Wanaka, I know there's not a lot to do in Wanaka," Aaron said.

Tomorrow night's "Blue Moon Infinity" party is a free, ticketed event for teenagers in years 10-11 (aged between 14 and 16).

Planning started two months ago and the event has been made possible through fundraising and a grant.

Aaron hopes to organise up to four parties this year for the same age group.

For him, the issue is not saying no to drinking, but about having a good time without drinking.

"New Zealand does have this mentality [about drinking].

"I believe very soon a lot of people are going to wake up and realise it is not good.

"If I can change one person's attitude on Friday night, I will be happy."

Aaron said he also wanted people who were concerned about youth access to alcohol to know he was planning a safe event.

Several pupils were turned away from last weekend's alcohol-free MacStock concert because they were drunk on arrival and two were admitted to hospital for alcohol poisoning.

Aaron said the doors would also be monitored at Blue Moon Infinity, with security being provided by a group of older teenagers and adults.

There would be free food and the Students Against Drunk Driving committee from Mt Aspiring College would be providing free mocktails.
