More than 750 Wakatipu pupils took part in the inaugural Wakatipu Kids Games this week and organiser Jendi Paterson says she wants to see more such sports programmes planned.
The two-day event was aimed at getting more children involved in sport and Miss Paterson said it had been highly successful, with only a few stresses along the way.
"Kids don't play sport like they used to. When I was at school, we were playing sport on a Saturday, there was no question about it. Now, kids have other things on, or just haven't been introduced to sport, so hopefully this has got some of them hungry for sport."
She said it was important for children to get involved in team sport, especially as it taught them to work with others and made them more employable in the future.
Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden agreed and in her closing speech to the children challenged them to take up a sport if they had not already.
"Sport is fun to be involved in, especially team sports, so I expect you all to be part of some sport after this."
Miss Paterson said Lakes Leisure was planning to run a similar interschool competition annually, but hoped to rest up for a week before starting the next one.
Years 5 to 8 pupils from St Joseph's, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Remarkables and Kingsview primary schools were present.
