Swimmers 'silly'

Hot weather is attracting swimmers to Lake Wakatipu, but Queenstown's harbourmaster warns some are swimming in the wrong areas.

Marty Black said he was not impressed with the actions of one group, aged between 18-20, after four of them chose to swim in the Queenstown Bay dock on Christmas Day.

They had been swimming in the bay area where some of Queenstown's larger boats berth.

They began to swim towards the commercial vessel The Million Dollar Cruise, before Mr Black warned them their behaviour was "silly" and told them to stay away from the area.

He told the Otago Daily Times the dock was too dangerous for swimming.

The group was not one in isolation, as others often would swim there, he said.

"It's not ideal, really. There is plenty of room for them to be swimming on the south side of the bay."

Mr Black had called police about the Christmas Day incident, but the group had left the dock by the time they arrived and could not be located.

A police spokesperson said later the swimmers could have been charged with disorderly behaviour.
