The first-year Otago University law and English student applied for one of Aurora's two scholarships available in Dunedin and Otago, for year 13 pupils who achieve the highest marks in level three NCEA scholarship courses.
Aurora chief executive John Walsh presented the scholarship during Tuesday's college assembly, describing Miss Davis as "one of the nation's most brilliant academic students" of 2007.
He was impressed by her passion to succeed and her writing and debating skills.
New Zealand had many sporting and music heroes but the nation did not hear a lot about academic heroes, he said.
Miss Davis told the assembly it was important to believe in yourself and look to the staff at Mt Aspiring College for support.
Acting principal Wayne Bosley said the school was very proud of Miss Davis.
"We will take full credit for everything you have achieved," he joked.
