For those people who enjoy a good run around, a new Lakes Leisure winter sports league could be for you.

''Thud'' is a six-week cycle of turbo touch, handball, unihockey and dodge ball, for teams of six or more, on Tuesday nights.

The competition starts next Tuesday and competitors are urged to sign up as soon as possible and get both individual and team entries in.

Lakes Leisure community programme and recreation manager Jendi Paterson said Thud would provide a variety of European sports not otherwise on offer in the district.

''They're not mainstream, really. In the winter not everyone wants to overcommit to a team sport, so the short blocks of six weeks are ideal for that.

''We are lucky here because we are not short of people who know how to play handball and the rest.''

Top-level handball was on show at last year's London Olympics and Miss Paterson thought that could be a drawcard for anyone thinking about entering Thud in its inaugural season.

''Everyone saw it at the Olympics and how cool was it. People started to talk about it.''

The competition would require six to eight teams and individuals were welcome to put their names forward and she would find them a team to join, Miss Paterson said.

She said it was an ideal opportunity for businesses and team building.

''It is social but serious, with some good sportsmanship.''

• Entries cost $220 per team for the first block and $400 for two blocks.
