Just over $3500 was raised on Friday from donations and a silent auction at Tatler restaurant and bar for the Otago SPCA.

Organisers Rachael Errington and Jo Weir were "extremely pleased" with the fundraising outcome and thanked all involved for their enthusiasm.

SPCA representative Helen Saunders, of Alexandra, said the society was extremely grateful to all involved.

"Queenstown doesn't have its own SPCA branch so . . . it was a great opportunity to meet so many people and raise awareness of just how much the Otago SPCA does in the area, both with stray and abandoned animals and also with animal welfare complaints.

"The money raised will be used towards our costs in housing and preparing for adoption the stray and unwanted animals in this area over the Christmas period," she said.

On average it costs the Otago SPCA $321 to prepare a cat or kitten for adoption and $535 to prepare a dog or puppy.

While the theme of the auction was "A pet is not just for Christmas", the Otago SPCA did have several cats and dogs ready for new homes for the festive season.

If you are able to provide a long-term, loving home for a pet in need, contact the Otago SPCA on 0800 682-4677.
