A plea for canned meat to feed an unexpected influx of cats and kittens at the Otago SPCA has met with a generous response this week.
Executive officer Phil Soper was happy with the reaction from the public which resulted in bags of cans arriving at the shelter, but he would like the food to keep coming.
Donations were relied upon, "or we won't survive".
A "steady flow" of adoptions during the week had also helped, but more were always welcome.
A large number of cats and kittens were still being cared for along with 25 dogs and puppies.
"Give them a chance," he said.
