A mothballed RNZAF Skyhawk has found a new home at Wanaka Airport.

The decision was announced by Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean, who said it would enhance Wanaka's reputation as an aviation tourism destination.

"I have long supported calls by the aviation community to see one of these planes located in the area and made a point of reinforcing Wanaka's case to Defence Minister Wayne Mapp,'' Mrs Dean said in a statement.

"I'm delighted that everyone's efforts have now paid off, with one of these planes set to be permanently located in Wanaka for locals and visitors to enjoy. Thousands of visitors already flood into Wanaka to enjoy the aircraft and aviation history on offer,'' Mrs Dean said.

The Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow Charitable Trust has been negotiating to secure a Skyhawk for some time. The trust's new visitor attraction, Warbirds and Wheels, opens later this year.
