Skifield staff levels abate

Unfavourable snow conditions and "natural attrition" mean staff at NZski fields are becoming fewer a month out from the scheduled closing date of October 7.

NZski chief executive James Coddington confirmed there had been some lay-offs due to the conditions on Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, which have both had less natural snowfall this season than ideal.

Coronet Peak especially had been affected, he said.

The process was one the company, which also owns Mt Hutt in Canterbury, went through every year but the decreased business this year had resulted in the company looking at the option earlier.

"NZski every year goes through this at the end of the season and when business levels reduce and snow conditions reduce, less people come up the mountain and less people are required to work.

"It is dictated a lot by the weather and also the business levels ...this happens in every ski resort.

"There is no specific numbers, it depends on business levels for each of the departments."

He also said that at this point in the season, staff, especially those from overseas, tended to move on and find other employment, travel or return home.

The majority of departures could be attributed to this natural attrition, as opposed to weather-related lay-offs.

"There is on top of that [natural attrition], with the decreased business levels due to snow conditions ... some lay-offs due to the conditions. This is a very similar time to last year."

The gradual decrease in staff would occur throughout September, he said.
