Queenstown Airport's $2 million runway lights project has been completed, with the lights expected to be operational on Monday. This picture was taken from the Crown Range on Monday night as the lights were being tested. The Kawarau and Shotover rivers are in the foreground.

Funded by the Airways Corporation, the 118 runway lights will be used this winter to help reduce the number of flight diversions caused by bad weather. Eventually, they will be used to maximise the airport's daylight operations, allowing aircraft to land until 10pm.

However, that is not expected to occur before next winter.

It is the first set of runway lights to be installed in New Zealand in more than 25 years.
