Remarkables Primary School is seeking permission to undertake earthworks to create a sports field, for pupils and public users.
The land in question is an irregular-shaped section measuring 1600m3 of Frankton Domain, which bordered the school.
The land was under-utilised due to contours and it sloped down towards the lake, Dan Egerton, of APL Property, said in a report to be discussed tomorrow at the Queenstown Lakes District community services meeting.
Some trees growing on the proposed site would need to be relocated and ongoing maintenance would be at no cost to the council.
"Given that Remarkables Primary will not be using the field all year, it has been suggested that if the proposal is approved that Lakes Leisure manage the fields for bookings during weekends, public holidays and school holidays," the report said.
The area is zoned rural general.
If approval was granted, the school would need to apply for resource consent since the proposed works were much larger than permissible.
It was recommended the council publicly notify its intentions to approve consent, granting a 30-year term, and that the school advise nearby residents via mail drop.
