Like most great events, the Kingston community's Shirt Tail Rock Sprint yesterday morning began at the pub.

Co-organiser Terzann Elliot said the "sprint" was just one of the many activities held in the past few months to raise money for the Kingston community's planned emergency services complex.

The supporters far outnumbered the competitors, of which there were 11.

But Ms Elliot said the event would become an annual one.

She expected numbers to rise in the future.

"It's just the beginning.

"I think people were put off because they think they're not the fastest.

"Hopefully, next year we can inspire more people to enter."

Some chose to run the steep 1km hill, others chose to walk, and the competitors were set off at one-minute intervals.

The winner was Samuel Keenan.

He took away $500 for his efforts, and gave $200 of that back to the community to help with fundraising.

Second place and $100 went to Michael Sinclair.

The first woman home, winner of a $100 gift voucher from Kingston boutique store Mr So and So and $50 cash, was Sharron Chart.

Ms Elliot came in second place.

The veteran section was won by Karen Scott.

She received a Mr So and So voucher, a bottle of wine, and a T-shirt.

Her husband, Murray, came in second place.

The official counting hadn't taken place yesterday, but Ms Elliot said the event raised about $700.
