Rugby team fined for off-field behaviour

An element of professionalism has been introduced to a country rugby team following misconduct at the weekend.

Arrowtown Rugby Club coach Richie Anderson said the whole team was fined at training on Tuesday night and the $200 gathered was presented to the Arrowtown Community Preschool yesterday.

Mr Anderson said following the team's 74-0 win over Clyde on Saturday, several members of the team ‘‘lost the plot'' and after arriving back in Arrowtown let loose a string of expletives while leaving their van.

A team sponsor heard the language and complained to Mr Anderson.

Mr Anderson decided to make a public apology and ensure the punishment benefited the community.

‘‘It was boys being boys really [but] the fine will come out of the money they earned [dismantling the historic Mt Soho woolshed last month]. It's maybe a professional element coming to the poor amateurs. It isn't going to happen again, I can say that now.''
