Response urged on roles

The roles the Queenstown Lakes District Council thinks it should play in community events are open for public response when its draft events strategy is released today.

A group of representatives from ASB JazzFest Queenstown, Southern Lakes Festival of Colour, Winter Games NZ, Warbirds Over Wanaka, Challenge Wanaka, Michael Hill New Zealand Open, and Michael Hill International Violin Competition will meet council staff and possibly Queenstown Mayor Clive Geddes on December 3.

Festival of Colour director Philip Tremewan said the group was preparing a presentation and drafting a document to submit at the informal meeting next week.

Representatives had a "few suggestions and inquiries" about the draft, he said.

"It's great there's a strategy out there and it covers a fair amount of territory. There's a lot of others to measure it by, from strategies in Wellington and Christchurch, and obviously [there will be] discussions about the quantity of funding proposed to be set aside."

The draft events strategy covered the maintenance and development of events by the council; leadership and support of events; how it aimed to meet community needs; and the Event Partnership programme.

The proposed programme could herald the forming of a subcommittee of community services to consider partnership applications and funding.

A discretionary $50,000 is set aside in next year's long-term council community plan.

It also sets out the eligibility criteria. The strategy identified the benefits and drawbacks of events to the district.

QLDC arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell recommended thoughtful public reaction.

Drop-in sessions on the strategy would be on December 3 from 3pm-5pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre, Wanaka; and December 4 from 3pm-5pm at the Queenstown Memorial Hall, Queenstown.
