More than 40,000 visitors and 20,000 locals will turn Queenstown into the party capital of the Pacific for the next 10 days, with the launch today of the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.

Now in its 36th year, the festival boasts a programme of more than 60 free and ticketed events around the resort. Virtually all Wakatipu businesses are ready to capitalise on the massive influx of people.

Festival director Simon Green was an oasis of calm yesterday, amid bustling technicians who were preparing the new Earnslaw Park main stage for the free opening party.

"Everything's coming into play the way we needed it. The weather's played its part. It's picture-postcard Queenstown."

Mr Green, decked out in items representing some of the major events on the festival calendar, said the team of eight staff, as well as production crew and 70 volunteers, were "positively buzzing" with excitement over the launch, after 12 months of organisation.

Party people "have to come down for the opening night, Mardi Gras and the Rail Jam to see what we've accomplished".

"We've put a lot of time, energy and investment into the free events this year. They include the opening party, Dragon for Mardi Gras, and the Rail Jam bringing the mountain downtown."

Prime Minister John Key will officially launch the festival at Earnslaw Park.

The programm will begin at 6pm, with live music, including the Lynch Mob, of Arrowtown, and Southland sensation Pipeworkz.

A dazzling fireworks display will light up the night at 7pm.

"For those who can get here, get here and get stuck into it," Mr Green said.

"It's been a long time coming and we're ready to get the party started."
