A-League football team the Wellington Phoenix will make its South Island debut as part of this year's Queenstown Winter Festival.

Organisers have today confirmed the Phoenix will play Melbourne Victory in a pre-season match during the festival, which runs from June 27 to July 5.

The June 27 match at Queenstown's Events centre is expected to draw fans from throughout the region, as well as the Phoenix's diehard fans, the "Yellow Fever".

Lakes Leisure event manager Karen Gemmell said spectators were expected from Central Otago, Invercargill, Dunedin. Christchurch and Wellington.

"We're delighted that the Queenstown Event Centre is able to host yet another high profile sporting event in the region, with all its associated spin-offs for the town".

The community's youth will also benefit, with planning underway for a sporting clinic on Friday, June 26.

Primary school children and high school students will have an opportunity to participate in a special session with members of the Phoenix, who will take them through their paces and provide plenty of tips.

The match will kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday, June 27.
