A mural with positive environmental messages for the community and visitors has been created by Glenorchy School pupils, who entered it into both the Keep New Zealand Beautiful ''Wall Worthy'' and the Resene Mural Masterpieces competitions.

Pupil Jamie Hamilton (10) said each panel explained something about the township.

''One of the panels says 'May the Earnslaw remain on the lake'.

"On the news the Earnslaw is a big issue recently because it is spreading pollution and the panel is saying it should stay there because it is a symbol of the area.

''Another theme of one of the panels talks about the tunnel never scarring Glenorchy.''

Kaitlyn Johnson (12) said that pupils had started the mural in term 2, week 1.

Ideas came from the pupils in pairs and research on the internet, with the whole group deciding on the final designs.

''Finally, after weeks of painting and drawing up designs, we finally got the mural looking professional and beautiful up on the fence,'' she said.

''It really tells people that Glenorchy School has a strong environmental focus.''
