The Queenstown Lakes District Council has applied for resource consent to remove a protected heritage tree which is a danger to public safety at St Omer Park on Lake Esplanade.
The poplar tree had been inspected and deemed unsafe by an arborist but the council needs consent to remove it, as it is a protected feature under the district plan.
The application from QLDC parks manager Gordon Bailey to Lakes Environmental says the tree is healthy but in danger of falling, because its roots have been undermined by wave action from the lake.
"Due to its height of 30m plus, if it fell towards Lake Esplanade there is a real risk of injury and damage to property," he said.
A replacement tree would be planted in a suitable location in the park.
