Police thankful for quiet Easter

Easter holiday-makers were generally well-behaved, despite three arrests for drink-driving and other minor offences, Queenstown police say.

Sergeant Brian Cameron, of Queenstown, said police were pleased with driving and general behaviour in the resort.

Of the arrests for drink-driving, the highest level recorded was 1292mcg, from a 35-year-old Queenstown woman.

She was arrested at 2am on Sunday, after crashing into a parked car on Wynyard Cres, in Fernhill.

Another man was arrested at 10pm on Saturday, following a domestic incident.

Sgt Cameron said the 25-year-old was charged with intentional damage after buying a bag of sugar from New World supermarket and allegedly pouring it into the petrol tank of a vehicle.

He was also charged with drink-driving.

An 18-year-old Christchurch woman was processed for drink-driving on Stanley St at 1.18am on Sunday, with a reading of 542mcg.

The legal limit for anyone aged under 20 is 150mcg.

"While any drink-driving offences are disappointing, certainly the roads have been quieter this weekend than in previous years," Sgt Cameron said.

A "couple" of bars had been in breach of their special licences for trading over Easter weekend, he said.

Other incidents dealt with by Queenstown police included the arrest of a 37-year-old Welsh tourist at 5pm on Saturday for allegedly stealing a bottle of aftershave from Wilkinsons Pharmacy.

The man was chased by pharmacy staff into the Novotel Queenstown Lakeside Hotel where he gave himself up to police.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at 9am on Sunday for driving while suspended on Gorge Rd.

His Subaru car was impounded for 28 days.

A 28-year-old Christchurch man was arrested at 1.30pm on Sunday after allegedly stealing mascara from Wilkinsons Pharmacy.
