Plenty of prizes at duathlon

"Weenies", "midgets", junior and intermediate Wakatipu residents will be able to burn off extra energy this weekend during the Q92 The Breeze Lake Hayes Kids Duathlon.

Sunday's event has been a part of the Wakatipu calendar for 16 years, with most of the area's children competing in it at some stage.

The duathlon offers spot prizes, with all junior athletes entered eligible, irrespective of their placing or finishing status.

Event director Charlotte Graf said the large group of local sponsors recognised the value in children having a go and enjoying themselves.

Every entrant would receive a T-shirt and sponsors had provided prizes.

The event would have four different age categories - 6-7-year-olds, deemed the weenies; 8-9-year-olds, the midgets; 10-11-year-olds, the juniors; and 12-14-year-olds, the intermediates.

Entrants could choose to compete either as a team or individuals.

The duathlon starts with a run, followed by the bicycle ride.

Distances were matched to the age groups, with the event held inside the Lake Hayes showground.
