In this week's Off Piste, the Queenstown Times caught up with Coronet Peak Snowsports School manager Cesar Piotto, to find out about the job he describes as "part councillor, part drill sergeant".

Why did you choose this job?

I have always been attracted to the challenge of leading a large team of people. When the job opened up, it was the perfect opportunity.

Is it your first season?

It's the second season on the team. I just finished another winter season in Colorado and had to come back for more Kiwi fun.

Where are you from?

Born in Brazil, grew up in Australia - somewhat displaced recently.

What kind of job (or education) did you do before you took up this job?

19 seasons teaching skiing around the world and a university degree that hasn't been framed yet.

How would you describe your job?

Part councillor, part drill sergeant.

What is the best thing about it?

Being up at the mountain every day with a great bunch of people.

Which challenges come with it?

Any time you're dealing with people (staff and guests), there are challenges. I'm learning as I go.

Which skills or qualities are needed?

You need to be able to think on your feet and communicate quickly and effectively.

Who would it appeal to?

Someone who wants to accelerate a receding hairline.

How are you settling into life in Queenstown?

Queenstown is home now; it didn't take long to settle in.

What is your best advice to people who move to Queenstown for seasonal work?

No matter where you're coming from, you probably haven't seen anything like this. Be flexible and bring a warm jumper.

What has been your most amusing on-the-job experience so far this season?

Being asked what day it would start snowing.
